Northern Quebec at a Glance
Québec's largest tourist region consists of rolling tundra resplendent with roaming
herds of caribou, immense rivers, ice flows, lush boreal forest, shimmering green
aurora borealis and some of the highest mountains in eastern Canada. Activities
abound for adventure seekers, including outdoor sports such as hunting, fishing,
snowmobiling, hiking, dog sledding, skiing, canoeing and mountain biking. Other
attractions in Northern Québec include the North
Shore Regional Museum, the 3-km (2-mi) wide Pingualuit Crater and the George
River, which is known as a prime spot for salmon, char and trout fishing. Visitors
to the Arctic region of Nunavik will be in for a shock, depending on the time
of year. During the middle of summer the sun never goes down, blanketing the area
with omnipresent sunlight. The opposite occurs around the winter solstice, when
afternoon activities are accomplished under darkened skies—and the brilliant
northern lights.
